Mablethorpe taxi driver gets 14 month ban for drink driving on birthday
A MABLETHORPE taxi driver has been banned from the wheel for 14 months after admitting driving with excess alcohol after celebrating his 72nd birthday.
Colin John Cook, of Aqua Drive, was said to have been driving his Vauxhall Vectra taxi in Mablethorpe on April 4 at around 7.45pm when he was in a slight collision with another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.
As he didn’t stop, the other driver turned round and followed him and then saw him reversing into a driveway in Aqua Drive.
He attempted to have a conversation with Cook but was unable to do so and called the police after Cook went into his house.
When officers arrived they found Cook was drinking alcohol in the house.
Prosecuting, Jim Clare said expert evidence showed that Cook would have had 58 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath at the time before he started drinking at home. The legal limit is 35.
In defence, Dave Clapham said it had been Cook’s birthday and he had been under the ‘popular misconception that two pints was ok’, but it wasn’t in this case.
He said Cook had no previous convictions and he did admit to police what he had drunk at the pub and what he had drunk at home, whereas he could have said he had drunk more at home after the incident.
Cook was fined £110, plus a £15 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
He was disqualified from driving for 14 months and offered the drink drivers’ rehabilitation course which would reduce the period of his disqualification by three months.
