Manby circus rebuffs animal rights criticism

Thursday 11am - AS THE Great British Circus is about to roll into Manby its ringmaster has rebuffed a call from an animal rights charity to boycott his shows.

Ringmaster Martin Lacey said a report released last November from Defra, the government department for the environment, food and rural affairs, has put the circus animal debate to rest.

He said: "Our animals are provided with the best possible nutrition, accommodation and veterinary care when required and we give them the best possible care at all times.

"Now the government report has found nothing wrong with what we do we hope the animal activists and extremists will at last listen to the facts and face up to the truth - our animals have a good life in our circus."

The Captive Animals' Protection Society had issued a call for people to boycott the shows because, it says, the circus is no life for any animal.

But the Defra report concludes there appears to be little evidence to demonstrate the welfare of animals kept in travelling circuses is any better or worse than that of animals kept in other environments.

The Great British Circus comes to Manby Showground from March 5 to March 16.
