Market town success ‘will put Louth on the map’ says town Mayor
LOUTH is officially Britain’s favourite market town!
The town has topped a poll among thousands of readers of BBC Countryfile magazine, and the win has been described as ‘national recognition of how special Louth is’.
It tops off a great few months with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and arrival of the Olympic Torch earlier in the summer.
The magazine launched the contest in April, and after Louth was shortlisted it was left to the public to decide.
And Louth saw off stiff competition from the likes of Ludlow, Stamford and Richmond to earn the title.
Mayor of Louth, Coun Jill Makinson-Sanders, said: “What an exciting way to round up this very special summer. Winning will really put Louth on the map and we hope it will mean a lot more visitors coming to discover all the marvellous things we have to offer.
“Louth is a very special market town, the time is right for us to gain national recognition for having an excellent range of independent shops and some of the very best specialist food shops as well as three markets and Lincolnshire’s only cattle market.”
East Lindsey District Council’s Coun Craig Leyland said Louth remains a ‘unique and charming town’ and described the win as a tremendous achievement.
The news came as a shock to town clerk Linda Blankley who was the recipient of the special award, but she had to keep it a secret until the magazine hit the shelves this week.
Louth Town Partnership Co-ordinator Sam Phillips added: “This national recognition proves how special Louth is and will hopefully encourage more visitors to our fantastic market town.
“Louth is full of charm and character and we’re still lucky to have vibrant markets as well as many local, family run, independent shops.”
