A number of members from the Sutton on Sea WI gathered at The Meridale Centre on Friday to receive the special cup from John Monk (MBE).

Sutton on Sea WI were “amazed” to receive a memorial trophy from The Meridale Centre to recognise the hard work they have done for the Meridale.

Leader of The Meridale Centre, John Monk (MBE) presented this extra special cup to the ladies of Sutton on Sea WI and was proud and privileged to give out the cup which has a very special place in his heart.

John said: “This cup was presented to The Meridale Centre in 1972 in memory of local man Martin Robinson who died that same year and he was a family member of mine.

“Everyone knew him well after he lived in Sutton on Sea and this is a way to help keep his memory alive and this cup will always hold a very special place in my heart.

“This cup is not awarded annually and was last presented in 2010 and this is only the seventh time it has been presented.

“It can be presented to an individual, group or certain organisation for consistently going that extra mile.”

John added: “Presenting this cup to the Sutton on Sea WI is my way of officially recognising the hard work and dedication by them and everything they have done to support the Meridale, we have formed a fantastic relationship with the ladies over the years and long may it continue in the future.

“I must also thank them for their recent donation of £350 towards seating for the Meridale Community Garden.”

Sutton on Sea WI president of 12 years, Janet Lisemore, said: “We were absolutely amazed to receive this cup, the news was absolutely delightful.

“It took us completely by surprise. John turned up at our recent meeting held earlier this month and announced we had been awarded with the cup, we had no idea. It’s absolutely wonderful.

“We have had a lot of connections with the Meridale over the years and we have been helping to raise funds for them every year towards the publication of their monthly newsletter. We know the great work that is done at The Meridale Centre and John has been fantastic.”
