What seemed like an ordinary supper of the Louth and Horncastle Conservative Association was in fact a surprise birthday celebration for MP Sir Peter Tapsell.

Sir Peter was left in the dark about the birthday dinner and assumed it was another one of many of the Conservative Association suppers.

Sir Peter said: “I am astonished and moved by everything that has been said at this supper. I had absolutely no idea before I came that it was anything other than one of the Conservative branch suppers to which I have spoken for over half a century.”

He added: “It is astonishingly kind of the organisers to have gone to such trouble to pay this great honour to me and particularly Adrian Benjamin who has obviously been the moving spirit behind it all.”

Also to Sir Peter’s surprise, Prime Minister David Cameron, the Mayor of London Boris Johnson and the Bishop of London, Richard Chartres all sent letters to be read out during the evening wishing Sir Peter a happy birthday.

A slideshow of Sir Peter’s life was shown to guests and the night ended with a number of speeches, including one from Sir Peter himself.

A tribute was also made to the victims of the 1953 East Coast Floods, led by Mayor of Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea, Coun Bernard Dobbs.
