Mum and daughter’s 50 mile charity bike ride to raise awareness of organ donation
A mother and daughter are doing a 50 mile bike ride to raise awareness about organ donation.
Jessica Wilson, 18, and mum Charmaine are tackling the challenge in March on exercise bikes at the Meridian Leisure Centre.
They are raising money for charity Live Life then Give Life which helps save and improve the lives of organ and tissue transplant patients in the UK.
Jessica said: “My mum is a full time care assistant and I’m a full time support worker. We decided to do a 50 mile bike ride to raise money for Live Life then Give Life a few months back, after watching a programme called Love on the Transplant List which was about a young woman and her fight with Cystic Fibrosis.
“Live Life then Give Life help raise awareness about organ donation and also help to fund projects to help make transplants more successful.
“I was shocked to find out that 91 per cent of the population agree with organ donation and only 31 per cent of the population have registered on the NHS organ donor list. And surprisingly, one donor can save up to eight lives.”
She added: “Me and mum have a Just Giving page and the web address is www.justgiving.com/jessicaandcharmainbikeride or you can sponsor us by texting JWCW60 to 70070.”
Anyone can sign the organ donor register and consent to their organs being used in the event of their death. However, only a very small number of people die in circumstances where they are able to donate their organs. You are actually more likely to need a transplant yourself than to become a donor. Organs have to be transplanted very soon after someone has died.
