Monday 2pm - LOUTH Film Club is celebrating after taking the top prize at this year's Film Society of the Year Awards on Saturday and also winning the most important category prize, for its 2008/9 programme of films.

The nationwide awards ceremony organised by the British Federation of Film Societies, the national body for over 200 film clubs and societies across the country, took place in Sheffield.

Louth Film Club won the first award of the evening, for Best Film Programming, and the last, the BFFS's highest honour, the Engholm Prize for Film Society of the Year.

In between, it won a Distinction as runner-up in the Best Marketing and Publicity category and a Commendation in the Best Website category.

Louth Film Club Chairman Alex McMullen said: "I am particularly pleased the judges highlighted the variety and originality of the films we show because this is exactly what we aim for, with films from around the world, old and new, some famous and some little known.

"I'm also thrilled our marketing and publicity, led by our glossy but informative printed programme, was recognised, and our bright new website, which was rebuilt and relaunched earlier this year by our IT wizard Ian Evans.

"And to win the overall Film Society of the Year Award was quite extraordinary, given we only set the club up three years ago. I'm pleased, though, the judges mentioned in their citation the two successful children's film festivals we have run since last year's awards."

Alex praised the hard work and enthusiasm of fellow committee members and club founders Louise Niekirk, Mark Merrifield and Nick Louth, Gerald Parkes, owner of the Playhouse Cinema where the club shows its films on alternate Mondays, and the cinema's staff, led by manager Ralph Dalton and chief projectionist Steve West.
