POLICE have praised the quick actions of members of the public after a crash on the A16 at Kenwick Top near Louth on Monday afternoon.

The rider of a Yamaha XT660 motorbike, a 29-year-old local man, suffered burns to his arms, legs and neck in a crash with a silver Ford Mondeo, but according to police his burns could have been much worse had people at the scene not intervened to help put out flames after the bike caught fire.

The rider was taken to Grimsby Hospital and then onto a specialist burns unit at Wakefield and his condition is described as stable.

The 64-year-old driver of the car, a man from West Yorkshire, was uninjured in the crash which happened at 12.45pm.

A spokesperson for Lincolnshire Police said: “A number of members of the public assisted at the roadside, using water to put out the flames.

“Without doubt, their fast thinking and quick actions have prevented the burns being more extensive and we would like to thank them for their life-saving intervention.”

The road was closed for over four hours, reopening at 5pm.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the crash to call the Collision Witness Hotline on 01522 558855 to give information.
