Every year since opening, The Railway Tavern has made it a prerogative to raise money for a charity very close to its owners heart.

‘When you Wish Upon A Star’ is a charity
that grants children fighting life threatening illnesses a wish.

For landlords Keith and Dawn Jacklin, it was a charity that gave their nephew Callum Smith, a trip to Lapland.

Callum sadly passed away, aged 3, but his family continue to raise money in his memory.

This year they raised an impressive £1,831.18, and presented £1,076.16 to Joanne Heyward and Pam Wright from When You Wish Upon A Star, the remaining £755.02 was donated to the Air Ambulance, a charity chosen by the local community who donated and helped to raise the money.

“It’s an extremely poignant, emotional time for us, seeing the videos of the children we’ve helped brings a tear to my eye every time,” said Dawn.

The couple took over the derelict building 11 years ago and turned it into a thriving and successful community pub.

But 11 years is not
without its tales to tell.
Dawn added: “I wrote a book, it’s called ‘The Story So Far’
and the proceeds of that were used in our fundraising efforts.”

The book contains 10 years of fond memories from the local community and the owners and has now helped in raising money for such a special charity.

As well as the usual fundraising efforts, local punters went to great lengths to support the charity by designing and creating their own logos, attaching them to every item imaginable and taking pictures of the logo around the world.

Dawn and Keith will continue to raise money for charity each year.
