Top military award for well-known Louth man

Pat Hagan, the well-known former owner of the recently closed Mr Chips in Louth, has been presented '¨with the '˜Chevalier de l'Ordre National de la Légion d'Honneur' - the highest French honour - for his role in '¨the liberation of France.

Mr Hagan, 91, had an outstanding career in the Royal Marine Commandos in the 
Second World War, and he served all over the world.

He landed in Normandy, France, on D-day in June 1944 and they were under fire for 83 days before the enemy was overcome. His career in the Commandos extended from 1942 into the post-war 
period into 1946.

Pat was presented with the medal at the Royal Albert Hall, London, earlier this month.

The presentation was made in one of the boxes in the auditorium by Royal 
Marines Corps Regimental Sergeant Major, the Senior RSM, WO1 (RSM) PS Gilbey RM.

Pat’s military service has meant so much to him and he has taken part in many events since the war, meeting and helping his colleagues and telling people 
of the life of a commando.
