Trip to Little Ponton Hall

Little Ponton Hall near Stamford with a wonderful display of snowdrops is to be the first venue on the programme of popular trips, organised by Les Robinson for the members of the Barkwith and district Gardeners Association is launched for 2013.

Saturday February 16 is the date to note and while seats are usually booked up well in advance of the day, for various reasons there are cancellations and any one interested in finding out what is available can contact Les for details on 01673 857063 or have their name put on the waiting list.

Afterwards there will be a visit to Downtown near Grantham with a stop for supper at the well known Elite Restaurant for fish and chips on the journey home.

Little Ponton Hall has particular interest for local residents as it is the home of Mrs McCorquodale, the daughter of the late Major Herbert Turnor, who is heir to the Turnor family of Panton Hall the former owners of most of the land in Wragby and a good part of East and West Barkwith together with other surrounding villages.

They also owned the Stoke Rochford estate and when the Panton estate was sold in 1917 they made that their home at Stoke Rochford before moving to Little Ponton when Stoke Rochford Hall became a teacher training centre.

The family open the hall grounds each year to raise money for charity while also giving many people the opportunity to enjoy the snowdrops as they herald the welcome sign of spring.
