Twitchers flock to see rare cattle egret at Legbourne
Tuesday 11am - ABOUT 300 bird watchers have visited Legbourne in the past week trying to catch a glimpse of a rare cattle egret.
Another 500 have been at the coast near Donna Nook on the lookout for an exotic glossy ibis.
Louth bird expert John Clarkson said the cattle egret is common around the Mediterranean but very rare here.
He said it is only the seventh time one has been seen in the county and the last one was in 1992.
Others have claimed it was 1986 when a cattle egret was last seen in Lincolnshire.
As we reported last week, the cattle egret was spotted in a field off the main road in Legbourne and twitchers then went online to tell people about it.
John said one reason for its popularity is it is very easy to photograph.
He said the glossy ibis is even rarer and has not been seen in Lincolnshire since 1976.
He said the one seen on the coast was given a ring on its leg on the Cota Donana in Southern Spain in 2006.
