Update: Louth factory damaged in overnight cardboard fire
The owners of a factory in Louth which was evacuated when fire struck in the early hours of Sunday morning have issued a statement.
As reported, fire crews were called to the DS Smith packaging factory in Grimsby Road at around 5.20am after smoke was spotted coming from a machine.
But on arrival crews found that trained staff on the site had already tackled the ‘minor’ fire, which was caused by the build up of waste cardboard and dust in a machine.
The firm want to clarify that no equipment was damaged and that no staff were injured.
A DS Smith spokesperson said: “On Sunday March 3 there was an issue in a box making machine at DS Smith, Louth, which caused a minor fire.
“This was quickly put out by the site’s trained crew using fire extinguishers.
“In these circumstances it is normal to evacuate the factory and call the fire service.
“The plant was back up and running shortly afterwards, without any injuries to personnel or damage to the equipment.”
Previous story - A factory in Louth has been damaged after a cardboard fire tore through it overnight.
Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue report that crews from Louth and North Somercotes were alerted to smoke from a machine within a factory in Grimsby Road shortly after 5am this morning (Sunday).
They reported severe damage by fire to cardboard but the fire was put out by staff using extinguishers, before fire crews carried out an inspection on arrival.
A thermal image camera was also used by crews.
The cause of the blaze was the build up of waste cardboard and dust in a machine.
There was also an arson attack at a derelict building in South Reston overnight and on Friday night a crew from Alford attended a chimney fire in Whitethorn Way, Withern.
Further details on these incidents will follow as we get them.
