Vandalised Mablethorpe wildlife pond set to be brought back to life
Mablethorpe Town Clerk Jenny Cooper has been busy finding funding to reopen the popular St Mary's Pond in Mablethorpe.
A WELL-LOVED pond in Mablethorpe that had to be drained after vandalism looks set to be brought back to life.
After hundreds of fish were reported to be laying dead on the surface in August, St Mary’s pond was emptied leaving the town council with a huge repair bill headache and the site has laid dormant ever since.
It transpired that an array of items of debris had been dumped into the pond, damaging the lining and causing the water level to plunge.
But after months of hard work, town clerk Jenny Cooper has managed to raise over £13,000, almost enough to restore the reserve to its former glory.
A £10,000 boost from the National Lottery, added to a further £300 donation from East Lindsey District Coun Paddy Prince and a £25 NFU grant, plus £6,000 of council reserves mean means work is now imminent. Repair quotes range from £12,000 to £24,000, the lower end being for a reduced size pond.
Town clerk Jenny Cooper said: “I am delighted to say we have received these grants.I am still on the hunt for other grants and donations to lessen this even more if I possibly can. I am hopeful that by the end of this summer and into autumn we will once again have a conservation pond.”
Contractors must pump out any remaining water before removing the debris and relining and finally refilling the pond. The council hopes to be able to repopulate the pond with fish to replace the hundreds that perished and the 2,500 or so that had to be rehomed as a result.
The pond was refilled by the weekend’s downpours, but it appears the former waste site could soon return to the attraction it once was.
