Video: The wedding that nearly never happened, celebrated 60 years on

Waiting for Video...

LOUTH couple Doug and Cynthia Tunbridge are to celebrate 60 years of happy marriage with their Diamond Wedding Anniversary on September 20.

The couple met through the Salvation Army and were married way back in 1952 at Lincoln’s Salvation Army.

The wedding day wasn’t without incident though, as the registrar booked to oversee the event was actually at Sincil Bank watching a Lincoln City game.

A placard was paraded around the ground asking for him to get to the Salvation Army, and although he saw it he ended up at the wrong venue.

But he finally made it and they were married just the four hours late at 5.40pm, just 20 minutes before the venue closed.

Their wedding day even made it into the News of the World as a news story.

And now, 60 years on, they are celebrating their anniversary and have put their years of happy marriage down to ‘give and take, and a little compromise’.

Watch the video to see Doug and Cynthia reading one of their anniversary cards and see next week’s Leader for the full story.
