Volunteers at WRVS help older residents

The WRVS is raising awareness of its services across the area for elderly residents.

The group’s Home from Hospital service provides short-term support for older and vulnerable people when returning home from hospital or a period of intermediate or rehabilitative care.

The scheme provides support for four to six weeks by volunteers who welcome you ‘Home from Hospital’.

The aim of the volunteer is to help with tasks such as shopping, letter writing, collection of prescriptions and transport for appointments, lunch clubs and other social activities which will help the person readjust to life back home.

The newest WRVS service is the befriending service which provides company and help with small practical things that make all the difference; from small jobs around the home, shopping, collecting prescriptions as well as going on outings to just stopping by for a chat.

They are now offering a telephone befriending service thanks to a small team of dedicated volunteers.

Twice a week, they are able to contact service users who would just like to talk to someone. This service has become very valuable to many elderly people who no longer have family or friends near by.

They have started new lunch clubs which are proving very popular in the area.

There is one at Skegness every Tuesday from 11am to 1.30pm at Longhurst Lodge, £4.50 for a hot meal, games, raffle and company. They need to know the Friday before if someone wishes to attend so they can inform the caterers.

In Mablethorpe on Thursdays from 11am to 1.30pm at the Linkage Bowling Green, £4.50 for a hot meal, games, raffle and company. They need to know by the Monday before if someone wishes to attend.

The WRVS scheme covers an area which includes Louth, Mablethorpe, Skegness, Horncastle, Market Rasen and Wragby. Although they have quite a few valued volunteers, they are always looking out for more. All expenses are met and full CRB checks are carried out beforehand.
