Roadworks caused by a burst water main which have been causing tailbacks on the edge of Louth should be complete later today (Wednesday).

A four-way traffic light system has been in place in North Holme Road, affecting the busy A16 roundabout, for the past couple of days.

This was due to a water main which began to leak around a week ago and had then burst, at one point flooding the road.

Work began overnight on Monday night and Anglian Water, who organised the repairs, said the delay was caused by the repairs being more complex than was first thought.

The traffic lights had caused lengthy delays for motorists getting in and out of Louth, especially on Wednesday morning, with queues stretching along North Holme Road and up the A16.

Spokesman Antony Innes said the main was much deeper becuase the road had been built up by ‘three or four feet’, and that workmen actually discovered the old surface during the digging.

He said Anglian Water had worked hard to keep disruption to a minimum and apologised for any delays endured by motorists.

The road should be back to normal by mid to late afternoon today, Anglian Water confirmed.
