A LOCAL youngster who has a promising running future ahead was selected to spend the day with Olympic gold medallist, Sally Gunnell last Monday.

Brandon Tucker aged 11, from Louth, was one of a select group of 15 athletes who took part in the McCain Home Grown Talent Winners’ Day in Birmingham.

Company McCain launched the Home Grown Talent scheme in 2010. It’s a talent identification programme which helps to encourage talented youngsters who show exceptional promise and passion for running at McCain sponsored events.

Brandon who attends Kidgate Primary School was delighted to have been selected for this fantastic opportunity. He said: “I really enjoyed meeting Sally, she gave us information and advice on our training.

“It was a great day and the best part was getting to try out the high jump with athlete Matt Roberts as I haven’t done it before.”

For Brandon’s efforts, he has also been awarded with one year’s membership to train at his local athletic club.

McCain hosted the day to celebrate the breadth of promising young talent from the past two years.

They invited all the winning youngsters to come together and experience some first class training from McCain athlete ambassadors and their coaches to help further their development and encourage their interest in the sport.

The youngsters received hints and tips from Sally Gunnell and were also given the chance to try out the high jump with GB and NI International athlete Matt Roberts.

McCain young ambassador, Matti Mortimore was also on hand to give a talk advising the athletes on how to balance school work and athletics.

McCain UKA ambassador and Olympic gold medallist, Sally Gunnell said: “It was great to get all these talented young athletes together and give them the opportunity to train at such top class facilities.

“I was so pleased to see some familiar faces and hear about the young athletes’ progress and how they have benefited from the McCain Home Grown Talent Scheme. I’ll be watching out for these youngsters in a few years’ time.”
