Youth pulls together for a skateboard park

YOUTH has taken up the challenge of creating Louth´s first skateboard park.

At a meeting called by the Mayor Coun Brian Hodgkinson on Saturday youngsters formed a committee to plan, fundraise and organise the building of an area for skateboards, BMX bikes and in-line skates.

The chairman BMX enthusiast Gary Swallow, 19, asked for the backing of townspeople and businesses as well as youngsters and assured them: "We will do this properly."

Coun Hodgkinson had already won backing for the idea from police and councillors on the new town centre forum when they discussed possible remedies for youthful anti-social behaviour.

About 30 youngsters, eight to 19, turned at up at the town hall on Saturday. "I was pleasantly surprised by the number," said the Mayor, who had already received 1,400 replies to the questionnaire he sent round schools and youth groups.

Coun Hodgkinson said he was very impressed by the mature approach of the youngsters and the practical way in which they discussed what they had to do. The committee held its first meeting there and then.

Offers of ideas or help can be made to Gary on 07946 314713, 4.30pm to 7pm, or on email .

Other committee members are: vice-chairman Earl Warrilow, treasurer, Robert Brown, secretary Kate Wood, plus Sharon Leese, Chris Downs and Peter Scaman.
