A darts star from Maltby Le Marsh has become the first ever Lincolnshire lad to qualify for the televised Lakeside World Championships.
Sam Hewson, 21, has spent the last year climbing the senior rankings and is currently the 24th best men’s darts player in the world.
Having already spent four years dedicating his time to the sport and spending some of that time in the juniors league, Sam has this year toured Europe, competing in destinations like Turkey, Spain, Sweden and Belgium. The part-time darts player, who is also a gardener, has now picked up enough points to qualify for his first shot at a major senior ranking title and will appear at Lakeside, billed as the most exciting championships in the darts world and is always popular with the viewing public.
“To qualify for the televised Lakeside World Championships in January during my first time on the British Darts Organisation circuit is a dream come true,” Sam said. This is something I’ve worked so hard for within the four years I’ve been playing and so much practice has gone into this. Darts for me is just part-time for now, but I’m hoping it will be full-time within the next 18 months.”
But Sam feels that he could not have got this far without the support of his family.
He added: “My dad has been my hero and definitely needs a special mention, he has been there for me every step of the way. But the whole family have certainly been so proud and overwhelmed by it all. I wouldn’t be where I am now without them.
“I must also thank my sponsors for their ongoing support: ARG Plumbing and Heating in Louth, Rick Howell Steelworks in Theddlethorpe and Kirkstead Holiday Park in Trusthorpe.”
