With National Bike Week taking place this week (June 15-23), East Lindsey District Council is encouraging people to take advantage of bike hire at the Meridian Leisure Centre, Louth.

Bikes can be hired by the day, as part of the Bike4Life initiative, for a leisurely family ride around some of the district’s scenic cycle routes, or as part of a fitness regime for a rigorous uphill workout. There are bikes suitable for all ages and also wheelchair bikes, hand cycles and tricycles – subject to availability.

The council’s Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Coun Adam Grist, said: “Whether you stay in the Wolds, or venture further afield along the Water Railway to Bardney Heritage Centre or to the historic Cathedral Quarter in Lincoln, cycling is a great way to not only get about, but also to stay fit at the same time.

“The council is committed to offering people increasing opportunities to stay fit and active through a range of projects and initiatives, from guided walks, to cycle hire, to the current offer at the Meridian Leisure Centre where you can join for three, six or 12 months for just £60, £149 or £299 until June 30.”

And, as part of National Bike Week, Louth’s Mayor, Councillor David Wing will officially start a sponsored bikeathon at the Meridian Leisure Centre on Sunday June 23.

He will join other cyclists as part of the Louth and Grimsby Cycle Touring Club’s event in aid of Louth and District Hospice.

Cyclists can take part in three events – a 50 mile bike ride starting at 9am, a 30 mile ride starting at 10 am and a 10 mile family bike ride starting at 11am.

Entry is £6 for over 16s and under 16s can take part for free. Stewards and members of the local Neighbourhood Policing Team will be on hand to ensure the safety of the riders. Councillor Wing will start the 10 mile family bike ride at 11am.
