ROYAL MAIL have confirmed Mablethorpe’s delivery office in Somersby Avenue is to close before next March, but have played down any concerns over loss of service to local residents.

Operations will now be moved to the Alford delivery office, nine miles away, but none of the 25 staff members will lose their jobs.

The Leader broke the story in April after worried residents had contacted us demanding answers from Royal Mail.

They confirmed at the time that the delivery office could be closed due to cuts, and have now moved to announce that it will be closed by March next year.

The delivery office is the final sorting destination for mail before it is collected by postmen and women and residents can collect undelivered mail.

Royal Mail say the move will provide ‘improved working conditions, secure employment and a more cost effective operation’ and have worked with staff and unions to discuss the impact on individuals.

They say the move is due to ‘declining mail volumes and increasingly tough trading conditions’ and are undertaking a huge transformation to modernise.

A statement said: “We also appreciate that this move will impact on customers in the area and our planning activities always give due consideration as to how we can best protect and serve the interest of our customers.

“Almost no other company has daily contact with its customers in the way Royal Mail does and so we wish to continue providing consistent and high-quality services to our customers in Mablethorpe and across the UK.”

Royal Mail say customers can arrange free redeliveries of undelivered mail on a day to suit the customer, or can collect items from Mablethorpe’s Post Office free of charge.

Royal Mail’s Delivery Sector Manager, John McCann, said: “We have been talking to our people about the move, as we must modernise our operations.

“The relocation of Mablethorpe is part of this, allowing us to place the business on a sound, secure and stable footing.

“Our service to customers will continue to be a top priority during these changes.

“Customers can be reassured that we will do all we can to minimise disruption and ensure we maintain the high level of service they expect and deserve from Royal Mail.”

Alford’s delivery office, in Beechings Way, will be open from 7am until 12noon Monday to Saturday.
