A SUTTON on Sea man is hoping to bring to an end the ‘devastating effect’ arsonists are having on the area with a new campaign.
After a number of attacks last year, the fires have recently been relit with six beach huts at Sandilands damaged, two completely destroyed, only a week after a historic grade two listed building in Sutton on Sea was torched.
Local man Mike Kerrigan, 63, has created an eerie short movie to spread the word and is hoping people can work together to bring the spree to an end.
“Apart from the continuing destruction and mess, there is the huge financial loss and utter distress they are causing for both the owners and our valued holidaymakers,” Mike explained.
“It is damaging for trade and not a good advertisement for the area. Something must be done to stop this and protect the beach huts more securely.”
The 56-second clip begins with the message ‘Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea – a warm welcome?’ before showing the recent fire damage and urging the arsonists to stop their spree.
Although Mike admits that any awareness campaign, no matter how high-profile, can only promote more vigilance, he thinks crime prevention solutions must also be seriously addressed; such as more effective street lighting and CCTV cameras.
“For this we need both local people and council representatives to get their heads together,” he said.
Anyone who can help to take Mike’s campaign forward can contact him through the Leader.
