LETTER: Are our councillors honest brokers?

Whilst generally supporting the letters, published in your newspaper, from Andrew Leonard, the Mayor of Louth, it is hoped that he will not mind me making an observation that is somewhat at a tangent but which I feel affects the very fundamentals of local democracy.

I feel very uneasy at District and County Councils representing themselves as “honest brokers” when they have a vested interest in the outcome - usually increasing their revenue. Further, as with national government, how are they going to fund themselves when they have run out of everything of value to sell - taxes are liable to rocket.
