PANCAKES were tossed and devoured in Horncastle Market Place back in February, 1981, when the whole town gathered for pancake races.
Organised by Horncastle Chamber of Commerce, there was a number of races for both youngsters and adults – who had to carry a pancake in a pan and race through the Market Place at top speed.
This was the second year the races had been organised and it was smiles everywhere as familiar faces let their hair down and raced against each other to win prizes.
Members of Horncastle Judo Club featured in most of the races.
Trophies and gift vouchers were up for grabs and a raffle was drawn on the day by Miss Yorkshire TV, Della Dolan – who went on to become Miss UK the following year.
She was introduced to the then Mayor, Bill Cupit, and was handed a microphone to announce the start of the first race.
The pancakes had been donated by Granny Smiths and were cooked up by Julian Cousing.
Entertainment came from the Horncastle Silver Band and there was a stall selling tasty pancakes to cater for the huge appetites after all the racing.
