Parish church gets vacuum clean up!
Pages from the Past
1933* Visitors to Sleaford parish church could not fail to notice the fresh appearance of the interior after the introduction of a vacuum cleaner. Instead of just moving the dirt around, as had been the case with dusters over the last half century, it sucked up close to a quarter of a ton of dust in a major clean up.
* Neighbours in London Road, Sleaford ended up in court when a man was fined £1 plus costs and bound over to keep the peace after he threw two buckets of water over his disabled neighbour in a dispute regarding a shared water supply in their yard. As she washed down the yard he flung his door open saying: "If you want water this morning I will see that you have plenty."
* Sleaford Picturedrome featured British musical comedy King of the Ritz, starring Stanley Lupino and Betty Stockfield.
* Digby's old Saxon cross in the middle of the village had just been taken over by the Commissioner of Works who certified it as an ancient monument.* Unemployment figures in Sleaford for the period up to August 21 were: men 198, young men 15, women 22, young women 6, boys 9, girls 3 – total 253. This was less than the June total of 292.
1958* Public opinion was divided over an Urban District Council proposal to move Handley Monument in Sleaford after complaints from lorry drivers. There had been previous attempts to move the monument in 1946 and in the 1930s, each time being scrapped. Some shopkeepers and residents agreed it would resolve the traffic problems while others claimed it slowed motorists down, causing fewer accidents.
* Potato crops in Sleaford area were badly hit by July's flooding and continued wet weather. Farmers expected their yield to be half the previous year and the same with sugar beet, barely covering their costs.
* Despite an appeal in the newspaper, there had been no news of a missing model aircraft which flew off and disappeared from Cranwell. Owner Fl Lt Barber did not think it had flown out to sea but said it could have travelled some considerable distance on air currents.
* Sleaford Cricket Club broke even with their weekend fixtures. They romped home to a nine wicket victory against Rustons but lost by six runs to Newark when the Sleaford batsmen 'failed gloriously' to take the attack to the bowlers.
* Sleaford Swimming Club's water polo team did the double, winning the Lincolnshire league and the knock cup competitions.
1983* A Silk Willoughby woman's brush with death in a serious road accident left her with little hope of ever becoming well again. But 46-year-old Dorothy Barber's new found love for Barry Manilow helped her recover and she set up the singer's Lincolnshire fan club.
* Sleaford Cinema featured puppet film The Dark Crystal and female dance flick Flashdance.
* The summer's GCE exam results could not be published in the local newspapers due the county council cutting school secretaries' hours. Although teachers had helped to make sure all pupils got their results, they did not have time to compile the lists for the papers.
* Supporters of Sleaford Town FC were expecting to open their new social club next month. The clubroom, formerly used by Lincolnshire Roadcar, was completely renovated and decorated.
* Sleaford play scheme was proving popular with scores of happy children aged five to 11. They were able to play safely under supervision away from busy roads at Carre's Grammar School. Led by Sue Wintle, the scheme's highlights included a trip to watch Return of the Jedi and a visit to RAF Coningsby.
