RETIRED civil engineer John Walter Plant has died at Victoria House Care Home, Alford, aged 81.
Mr Plant was born in Alford and attended Alford Grammar School.
He was a noted and much admired team player for the local cricket team, and was integral not only to the squad but to the encouragement of the younger team members, resulting in his own personal and team achievements.
A break from cricket and work, when called up for National Service, saw John the bomb disposal and mine clearing section of the Army.
Remaining active and astute in his retirement he passed his advanced driver's test and, along with his wife Bess, travelled at home and abroad, and later took up sequence dancing with the North Somercotes dance club.
He was a keen trout fisherman and spent a lot of time at a friend's lake fishing and also maintaining and stocking it.
John is survived by his wife Bess, daughters Patricia Dupuy and Hazel Plant, and his sister and brother-in-law.
The funeral service, conducted by The Rev Wilma Horton, was held at Alford Crematorium.
