MARINERS had to win this game to stay up, four weeks ago they looked
To be certainties to join Louth Old Boys Reserves with the drop into the fourth Division, but with a terrific effort by all team members they achieved mission impossible.
Two wins and two draws saw them go above Mablethorpe Reserves and finish the Season with something to build on next September.
The game was played in glorious sunshine and Mariners kicked off down the slope.
The first half was a tense affair with a few chances created by both teams.
But at the interval it was goal less, Philip steel and Stuart Davy were outstanding in this half and Mariners having lost twice to Ludford this season knew they had to pull all the stops out.
The second half saw Mariners make a dream start, Lee Goddard latched on to a good through ball and at the second attempt found the net to put Mariners in the lead.
Ludford as expected came back strongly and forced a terrific save from goalkeeper Fraz, the second shot also cleared off the line by a defender.
After this Mariners upped their game and with the defence and midfield
Getting a grip on the proceedings the confidence flowed throughout the team.
Further chances were either saved or went wide and Mariners finished on a high, and a thoroughly deserved win against a very resilient but sporting Ludford side.
Mariners: F. Adams, B. Staples, S. Ettridge, S. Rickets, P. Steel,
C. Watson, R. Aspinall (capt) J Timson, S. Davy, L. Goddard,
S. Short, S. Burkes, D. Short, O. Jaines.
The match was well officiated by Malcolm Shotton.
Mariners train at Wood Lane 6.30pm Wednesdays, any players interested
in trials for next season are welcome.
