LOUTH Town returned to winning ways following three away defeats with a 2-1 home victory over Harworth Colliery Institute at Park Avenue on Saturday.
The Park Avenue pitch looked better than it has done for years in the spring sunshine as the kick off had to be delayed for 45 minutes due to the late arrival of the visitors.
It was Harworth who settled first though and took the lead through Stuart Needham after 20 minutes having already gone close through Daniel Burns.
There was a lack of confidence in Town's passing and they struggled to open the visitors defence, so much so Steve Wibberley in the Harworth goal did not have a shot to save in a forgettable first period.
At the other end, Paul Gains showed a safe pair of hand when he clung on to a shot from Packowski ensuring the visitors lead by just the single goal in at the break.
Town's performance in the second half was much improved. Stuart Leafe and Pete Herriman both fired efforts just off target and Mike Armstrong forced Wibberton into making his first save of the afternoon after a Nick Manders cross from the right.
The game turned in Town's favour with what proved to be an inspired substitution as Lewis Blakey came off the bench to score with his first touch.
The goal was Lewis's 15th of the season and takes him to the top of Town's goal scoring charts.
At last Town showed far more purpose in their play and for the first time in the game began to dominate play.
Mike Armstrong hit the foot of the post from a well taken free kick from the edge of the box and the same player was then denied what looked like a certain penalty after he was tripped in the area.
With just six minutes to play and the game looking to be heading for a draw, Mike Armstrong finally got the goal his persistence had deserved when he latched on to a ball over the top of the Harworth defence before chipping over Wibberley as he came out to meet him.
There was still time for Pete Herriman to go close to scoring his first goal for the club but saw his shot from a tight angle flash into the side netting.
At the final whistle, Town just about deserved the three points, although for long periods in the early stages that had looked beyond them.
Town's final two games are away at Thorne Colliery on Saturday, kick off 3pm, and then they finish the season with a home game against Kiveton Park on Bank Holiday Monday at 2pm.
Team: Gains, Morley, Willson, Hutton (Capt), Hopper, Davey, Manders, Armstrong, Herriman, Leafe, Casey. Subs: Blakey, Haywood, Burton.
