IT was agony for Louth’s cricket star Arran Brindle as England’s Women were beaten by four runs by Australia in the World T20 final on Sunday.
Arran scored just 13 off 12 balls as England failed to chase down Australia’s 142-4 off 20 overs, falling just a boundary short of victory.
England had been in brilliant form in the run-up to the final and began as favourites but were unable to wrestle Australia’s crown away in Colombo.
After winning the toss and choosing to field, the Aussies got off to a flyer thanks to Meg Lanning and Alyssa Healy before Jess Cameron struck a rapid 45.
All-rounder Brindle wasn’t called up to bowl for England and struggled with the bat before seeing her off stump uprooted whilst attempting a sweep shot to leave England 63-4.
England continued to lose wickets but some late boundaries saw them in sight of the win, however a six required from the last ball didn’t come and England were left to rue a missed opportunity.
