Louth’s Arran Brindle tips open World Cup after call up

Louth cricketer Arran Brindle says England are in for a tough test as they bid to defend their ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in India in the New Year.
The all-rounder has been named as part of England’s 15-strong squad who will travel to the subcontinent to take on the world’s best.
The 31-year-old goes into the World Cup with England as reigning champions after winning in Sydney in 2009.
Brindle and her squad know they face a difficult task repeating that feat, but will be buoyed by the England men’s test series win in the country this week.
“With slower and lower pitches we can only prepare as best we can, India are in our group and are particularly strong at home,” she said.
“We travel out on January 17 and are spending two weeks in Pune to prepare and put in the finishing touches.
“India presents its own challenges with the pitches but we go into it full of confidence too.”
Brindle was rubbing shoulders with some of the finest names in sport on Sunday night, as part of England’s squad who attended the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards in London.
And Brindle, who has enjoyed mixed fortunes in 2012 with bat and ball, believes the competition in February will prove to be an open one.
“Scores will potentially be lower than usual, so it’s who deals with the conditions the best,” she continued.
“Australia are strong and New Zealand are coming into form, but the West Indies could spring a surprise.”
Eight of England’s 2009 squad will be complemented by six players going into their first world 50-over competition.
England captain Charlotte Edwards added: “I’m so proud to be captaining such a talented team in what is the pinnacle event in our sport.
“There is a great blend to our squad with a combination of experienced players who were part of the 2009 success and emerging young players.”
England face Sri Lanka in their first match on February 2 and all England Women’s games will be on BBC Radio with a selection of 10 games from across the competition to be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
