The Year 8 football team from Monks’ Dyke Tennyson College were crowned County Cup Champions recently after dramatic penatly shootout win over Boston Grammar School.

The physically bigger Boston side proved to be very strong opponents and enjoyed home advantage in the final at Boston United’s York Street ground.

It was very even throughout the match with plenty of end to end play and it was Boston who went ahead when their striker broke through to score.

MDTC were not demoralised thoughand equalised just before the break when Cole Nelson dispatched a screamer from 20 yards into the top corner.

After brilliant performances from both sides, the final whistle blew and the score remained at 1-1 meaning there would be extra time.

After already playing for 90 minutes on a large pitch, both teams were feeling very tired and the extra 30 minutes took its toll, ending goalless and bringing penalties.

Boston won the toss and opted to go first, they scored but Nathan Marsh made it 1-1 with his spotkick before another Boston goal which was equalised by Tyler Millward.

Boston’s next shot was saved by Tom James before James Larder made it 3-2 with a stunning hit.

Man of the match Tom James was the hero again with another magnificent save bit Cole Nelson then saw his spotkick well saved.

Boston’s next attempt was successful but Jay Turner held his nerve to score the winning penalty and give MDTC a 4-3 penalty win.

Steve Wright, team coach and head of PE, said: “It was a superb and deserved performance from the lads. What a season they’ve had!

“Last 32 in the English Schools Football Cup, finalists in the District Cup and now winners of the County Cup. Well done to them all, it’s been a brilliant team effort and they truly deserve this win.

“A massive thank you must go to Bill Toyne, Tetney Garage Lincs VWA Volkswagen Audi Specialists for sponsoring the full set of football shirts worn by the boys in the final.”
