THE first mixed cup competition of the year attracted a good turnout at Kenwick Park Golf Club.
Elaine and Rob Houlton were delighted to win the beautiful crystal Gardner Greensomes trophy with a score of 39 points.
Sue and Graham Sykes scored 38 to take the runners-up spot. Karen Archer and Dermot Dreelan were third with 37 ahead of Wendy and Neville Green with 36.
Walt Rogerson (16) recorded the highest score of the day with 40 points to win division two from second placed Peter Whittle (19) with 34. Dave Hackett (8) won division one with 37 points on a count back from his nearest rival Stephen Hill (12).
The final of the men’s winter league proved to be a thrilling encounter. The winners of the Saturday league Howard Gobey (5) and Paul Marsden (21) played the winners of the Sunday league Paddy Shillington (6) and Karl Koslow (6) to decide the winner of the Derek Allard Memorial Trophy.
Howard and Paul established an early lead and were three up after seven holes but three birdies in a row from Paddy and Karl squared the match.
Paddy and Karl went on to become two up after 14 but Paul squared the match on the 18th to take the final to extra holes.
After narrowly missing the trees at the first his five net four was good enough to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
