Kenwick Park: Seacroft pair land Invitation Day honours

Guests travelled from far afield as Bristol to take part in the Kenwick Park Seniors’ Invitation Day.

Ron Irwin and Brian Handley (Seacroft) scored 41 points to win, one point ahead of runners-up Roger Goldsmith and Nigel Rhodes (Nottingham).

Alan Smaggasgale and Steve Parker (Laceby) took third place with 39 on a countback from Lee Fisher and Jon O’Brien (Radcliffe on Trent).

* Seniors’ captain Roger Culpin raised £325 for his nominated charity, St Barnabas Hospice. The Lincolnshire Wolds Riding for the Disabled provided a welcome halfway house for the players, resulting in £160 of donations.

* The seniors were drawn in pairs to play a foursomes stableford for the Ron King trophies, donated by the late Ron King, a long-standing senior member.

Steve Blackburn and Grahame Hewstone won with 35 points, pipping Peter Rogers and Richard Robinson (34) who took second on countback from Geoff Formby and Bernard Stafford. Gus Robertson, one of Ron’s old friends, sponsored the competition.

* The Kenwick men played the first of two medal rounds on consecutive weekends, for the Bernard Hoggett trophy.

Mike Morley just took top spot with 84-16=68 on a countback from Kevin Cowdroy (92-24=68). Spencer Wood was third with 84-15=69 ahead of his son Harry (78-7=71). All four are in contention going into the second round.

* Mixed pairs played a betterball stableford for the Havelock Trophy.

Clive and Carol produced an excellent 44 points to win from Matt Powell and Julie Harvey (40) with Chris Davies and Jane Briggs third with 37.

The top eight pairs go through to the knockout rounds to decide the winner of the Davlin Trophy.

* The ladies played a stableford competition for the Shelley Storr Trophy, presented in memory of the popular members’ secretary, who died suddenly in 2005.

Tracey Stobart (18) played well to score 36 points and win the silver division and the trophy outright.

Jean Sizer (21) carded 34 to win the bronze division, and Rose Stevenson (31) took the honours in the copper division.

Linda Cahalin(24) won the alternative nine-hole stableford with 12 points.

* The Ladies’ Mail on Sunday team, led by Birdie Dawson, made it through to round five thanks to a 4-1 win over North Shore and will next host Royal West Norfolk Golf Club on June 3.
