Ladies, get set for 5k run

ENTRIES are now open for the third annual ladies’ 5k run at Normanby Hall Country Park, near Brigg.

Women aged 16 and over are invited to run, walk or jog the gentle course along the paths and roads of the picturesque Normanby Hall estate.

These events have been a huge success in the past, some very positive comments coming from those who have previously entered.

More than 300 women took part in the 2011 race and organisers are hoping to attract more than 500 when the event takes place on Sunday, May 27.

North Lincolnshire Council is staging the event with Epworth-based specialist running retailer Metres to Miles.

Enter by yourself, with friends, a jogging group or with colleagues by visiting www.metrestomiles.co.uk .

All finishers will be presented with a goodie bag and a special event T-shirt and there will be prizes for the first three women to cross the line and the first team.

The run is organised under UK Athletics rules and entry costs £10 for members of Jog North Lincolnshire and the UKA, or £12 for all other entries.

The race starts at 9.30am. Please note the terrain is not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs.

Coun John Briggs, cabinet member for asset and estate management and sport, leisure and culture at North Lincolnshire Council, said: “With the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics taking place next summer, there has never been a better time to set yourself a sporting challenge.

“It doesn’t matter if you walk, jog or run this attractive course. What matters is that you take part and enjoy the experience.

“We also need marshals and other volunteers to help on the day. If you can spare some time please get in touch.”

Julian Moorhouse, of Metres to Miles, said: “We are so lucky to have this park on our doorstep and it’s a wonderful place to have a run.

“We had 200 ladies take part in the event last year but it looks like we could have many more in 2012 as entries are coming in greater volume already and there have been a lot of enquiries.

“I suppose with 2012 being such a big year for sport, many people are encouraged to take part”.

A gentle training programme to help complete beginners successfully complete the course will be available soon on the council website.

There are a number of free, women-only jogging groups across North Lincolnshire to help get you started, including in Brigg – meet at Old Courts Road car park (behind the police station) every Tuesday at 5.45pm.
