Mablethorpe Running Club member Paula Downing finished in the top quarter of the White Rose Ultra-Marathon despite running an extra three miles.

Paula and two other entrants ran the wrong way after children moved the direction arrows. She estimated they actually ran 33 miles, but of the 169 finishers, Paula finished in 38th place in 5hr 47min.

As part of the rules, she had to carry all of her kit around the 30-mile multi-terrain course along the rugged countryside surrounding Huddersfield.

The starting point was at around 850ft with a further 800ft of climbing during the ascent over Nettleton and Scapegoat Hills, Pole’Moor, Bradshaw and Marsden.

Matty Brennan won in a time of 4hr 17mins, and the first female finisher was seventh-placed Fiona Lynch in 4hr 54min.

* Debbie Jinks and Andrea Mettam joined a 121-strong field for Boston and District Athletics Club’s annual five-mile Poppy Run.

Debbie was pleased to finish 54th in a time of 41min 44secs, two minutes faster than her previous year’s time, while Andrea, in her first timed five-mile race, finished 80th in 46.52.

The race was won again by Iain Bailey (Sleaford Town Runners) in 27.15, and first female was Fallon Lafferty (Boston and District AC), 17th overall, in 34.49.

* The first of Cleethorpes AC’s Winter 5k Series was held last week on the main promenade.

Of the 172 entrants, four were from Mablethorpe who were headed by Carl Holmes who came 91st in 23min 26secs.

Sharon Wheatley-Margarson was less than a minute adrift, crossing the line 104th in 24.16, while Carl Musson (119th - 25.28) and Elaine Wilson (122nd - 25.32) were not far behind.

Nick Martin (Caistor Running Club) won the race in a phenomenal time of 16min 11secs, and the first female finisher was, as last year, Natalie Burns (Lincoln Wellington AC) who was sixth overall in 17.21.

* Mablethorpe Athletics Club meets on Sherwood Fields in Mablethorpe at 6.30pm every Monday and Thursday.

The club welcomes anyone with the slightest interest in running, regardless of age or ability.
