Louth Superbike racer Peter Hickman rounded off his season with two top 10 results at Brands Hatch on Sunday to end his season in an overall position of 17th on 65 points.
Riding the Buildbase BMW Motorrad Superbike Hicky completed his qualifying in a strong ninth place and began the first of three races from a third row grid position. But it all ended abruptly after just two laps when the front washed out at Paddock Hill Bend sending bike and rider scuttling through the gravel, race over.
The team worked well into the night to get the bike up and running for Sunday’s double header but without a fast lap behind him Hicky was forced to set off from a fifth row grid position for the start of the penultimate race. The pace car interrupted the race on two occasions causing the race distance to be extended to 23 instead of 20 laps distance. Hicky managed to move through the field up to ninth place but was beaten back to 10th with five laps remaining. He crossed the finish line in 10th place to pick up a further six championship points and had set a fast enough lap to begin the final race of the season from a fourth row grid position in 13th place.
This time Hicky got away to a fantastic start and soon moved up into ninth place. He was dicing within a group of seven riders all chasing sixth place and the action became more intense as the race wore on. Hicky moved up to seventh then dropped back to eighth and then ninth but eventually crossed the finish line for a fine seventh place to earn nine more championship points bringing his total to 65 and giving him a final position of 17th in the rider standings.
“I really enjoyed the action packed final race, we had a tremendous battle out there and I rounded off my year with a season best result of ninth place in the final race. I would like to thank Buildbase BMW Motorrad for giving me the opportunity to ride for them. We have had an amazing second half to the season and the team have worked their socks off to give me a strong bike. It’s a pity the season is now over as everything was nicely coming together!”
