Louth 3rd XI got their 2014 league season off to a successful start on Saturday with victory at local rivals and current league champions Grimoldby 2nds.
With interruptions expected for rain, Grimoldby won the toss and put Louth into bat. Following a steady start, the fall of two quick wickets brought together seasoned campaigner Rob Spencer and Under 15 member Ethan Payne on his 3rd XI debut.
With a mixture of patience, big hitting and top edges, the pair put on a partnership of more than 100 with Ethan reaching his 50 shortly before Rob.
The pair both fell in the search for quick runs as Louth amassed 197 for 5 off their 40 with young Dan Holmes picking up three wickets for the home side.
In reply, Dan Parks and Russ Haywood took on the youthful Louth bowling attack putting on an opening stand of 50 in quick time.
The introduction of Sam Ellis, also making his club debut, saw the first wicket to fall in his first over, however, Will Laughton came in and offered valuable support to Haywood, taking the score past 100 and a close finish looked on.
The return of Ellis for a second spell turned the game in Louth’s favour when he knocked back the middle order in quick succession with outstanding figures of 5 for 15. With Ellis ably supported by Payne (3-26) and Luke Freeman (2-37) Grimoldby fell 26 runs short of the Louth total.
