Kenwick Park golf: Captain tastes success as golfers remember Nev

Kenwick Park Golf Club men's captain Graham Sykes (14) combined well with David Hallifax (12) to win the Nev Green Memorial Trophy last week.

They scored an amazing 49 points in the betterball stableford to win the trophy, presented in memory of the very popular former member of the club.

Billy Wright (1) and Dave Varney (12) were runners-up with 46 points on a countback from father and son Nigel (10) and Freddie (17) Fearn who edged third place from George Hexton (11) and Steve Horner (22).

* An entry of 35 men played round three of the Summer Sizzler nine-hole stableford series.

Nigel Towse (12) had a good score of 22 points to win this round from Smiler Hutson (20) who scored 21 points to take second spot on a countback from Lewis Andrew (8).

* Several of the club’s ladies played very well in the August medal.

Donna Wood (36) was delighted to knock two shots off her handicap after shooting the best nett round of the day with a 69 to win the Copper Division. Jo Herring 33) was second with 71.

Tracey Stobart (17) won the Silver Division with a fine nett 70, ahead of Pam Westthorp (20) with a 74, and Pam Haywood (23) was Bronze Division winner with 75 from runner-up Jane Briggs (21) who carded 77.

Noreen Bradford (23) won the alternative nine-hole stableford with 17 points.

* The introduction of a regular Saturday competition for the junior girls saw Ciara Ringland (32) and Poppy Kinsey (39) both play very well, scoring 43 and 40 points respectively.

Ciara is now playing off a 29 handicap and Poppy is down to 37.

* The seniors played a stableford and Alan Smaggasgale won with a great score of 43 points to reduce his handicap by two to 11.

Jim Dindale (15) came second with 39, one point ahead of third-placed Ron Irwin (11).
