In a tense and tight competition at Lancashire’s Formby Golf Club, the hosts edged it 14-10 overall.

The team – which received good luck wishes from Masters champion Danny Willett - went into Sunday’s final singles session with a two-point lead.

Turner, from Alford, led the way for England, playing four under par for 12 holes and beating his opponent Andoni Ethenique 7&6.

“At the end of the day it’s one point for the team and that’s what matters,” the Kenwick Park golfer said.

Sunday’s foursomes saw Turner and James Walker beat Ethenique and Ko Jeong-Weon $&3.

The previous day, Turner went down 2&1 in the singles against Gregoire Schoeb and halved his foursomes, again with Walker, against Ugo Coussard and Ethenique.

This biennial international began in 1934 and England have now won 29 of the matches so far, conceding just five.

The French team were last successful in 2010 in Chantilly.

Masters champion Danny Willett played in the 2008 match and sent his good luck message to the team last night.

The full team was made up of Jamie Bower, Scott Gregory, Josh Hilleard, Paul Kinnear, Bradley Moore, Alfie Plant, Ashton Turner and James Walker.
