Mablethorpe runner Rainbow shines in 147 mile ultra marathon

MABLETHORPE Running Club member, Chris Rainbow (vet 40), had an Easter weekend that he will not forget in a hurry.

The ultra-marathon specialist lined up with 27 other long distance running competitors to tackle the exceptionally tough Viking Way Ultra Marathon over a mind-blowing distance of 147 miles.

This is the equivalent of running five and a half marathons straight off.

There was lots of off-road running and plenty of climbing to negotiate with the runners having to carry supplies and safety equipment in rucksacks as well as map reading to find their way around the course, often using head torches.

Chris was in first place for a lot of the race but having had a bad night that caused him to be sick a few times he showed his great motivation and battling instincts to end up in a superb fourth place in a great time of just under 35 hours.

Mick Casey (vet 60) and Mark Collingwood (senior) travelled the short distance to take part in the Friskney Half Marathon and had the usual windy conditions to face.

There were 169 finishers and Mick Casey was first back in 42nd place in one hour 31 minutes and 37 seconds, which won him the second prize in his age group category.

Mark was close behind in 45th position in 1.32.21 and a personal best time which reflected his improvement of late.

The club meets at the Athletic club on Sherwood Fields in Mablethorpe at 6.30pm every Monday and anyone, whatever their ability, is welcome to go along and run.
