It was the end of an era for Cordeaux Academy's Year 11 rugby team last week as they signed off on a winning note.

The Year 11 boys not going on the traditional Easter rugby tour over Easter may well have played their last home rugby match for the school last Wednesday.

The team entertained Skegness Grammar on a bitterly cold night with geography teacher and team coach Mr Young refereed the match while teaching assistant took on the coaching role.

The Louth team trailed 5-0 early on, but worked hard to bring the scores level before half-time through a Marc Askwith try.

Askwith then went on to score what turned out to be the match-winning try with just five minutes of the match remaining.

As the clock ticked down, Skegness Grammar threw everything at a resolute Cordeaux defence, but the boys stood firm and managed to hang on for a hard-fought victory.

Mr Young said: “The boys showed real teamwork with a positive attitude throughout, and they did Cordeaux proud.

“Some of our students even helped out by taking it in turns to fill in for the opposing team who didn’t have enough players due to illness.”
