£4.25m boost after Louth Hospital changes hands

A massive £4.25 million injection is in line for Louth County Hospital after its ownership was transferred to NHS Lincolnshire.

In addition to the transfer from United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust, NHS Lincolnshire has approved the extra spent and has appointed Kier Health as its partner to assist on the refurbishment of Carlton and Manby wards at the hospital, as well as a schedule of backlog maintenance work, which is due to commence in summer 2013 and be completed by summer 2014.

As part of the ongoing NHS transition, which will see PCTs - including NHS Lincolnshire - closed on 31 March 2013 and replaced by Clinical Commissioning Groups, the ownership of Louth Hospital will transfer ultimately into NHS Property Services Ltd, the new estates arm of the NHS.

As part of the same transition, Lincolnshire East Clinical Commissioning Group will take on local responsibility for commissioning of services at Louth Hospital from NHS Lincolnshire with effect from 1 April 2013.

Gary James, Interim Accountable Officer, Lincolnshire East Clinical Commissioning Group, explained: “The transfer of Louth Hospital will mean that local doctors, as the new commissioners, will have the responsibility for the services available at the hospital.

“In practice this means local people will be closer – via their GP – to the decisions being made for Louth Hospital, which has to be a good thing.”

Building on the success of the Shaping Health for Louth consultation, Lincolnshire East Clinical Commissioning Group has already started to engage with its local stakeholders and plans to continue doing so, as Gary James explains.

“The whole ethos behind the new Lincolnshire East Clinical Commissioning Group is ‘now we’re closer’ – what we mean by this is that as a patient you’ve never been so close to the decisions being made about your local NHS as you will be from the 1 April when our new Clinical Commissioning Group will be up and running.

We are determined that we will continue to build on the commitments made to Louth Hospital as part of Shaping Health for Louth, and local stakeholders, including local people and patients, will remain a vital part of this process.”

In terms of the planned spend on Louth Hospital, NHS Lincolnshire’s Estates Team, which will become part of NHS Property Services Ltd on 1 April 2013, is working closely with Kier Health to define briefs. Part of the work due to be undertaken will be to look at re-furbishing the hospital’s Carlton and Manby Wards. In addition, there is also a planned schedule of backlog maintenance.
