Covenham Sailing Club stalwart up for The Old Pulteney Maritime Heroes Awards

John Loomes, a sailing enthusiast from Ludborough, has been hailed a Maritime Hero in a new nationwide initiative – The Old Pulteney Maritime Heroes Awards.

John, who is in his 60s, was nominated by Covenham Sailing Club for his ‘outstanding club service’ and is one of 30 national semi-finalists selected from the many deserving nationwide entries.

The new annual awards scheme was launched in June by Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky to reward the outstanding passion, commitment and achievements demonstrated within Britain’s maritime communities, at both a local and national level.

To launch the scheme Old Pulteney contacted UK sailing clubs asking them to nominate any members they felt deserved recognition within one of the following three categories: Club Service, Bravery or Sailing Achievement.

John, who has been a club member for over 30 years, was selected by the Old Pulteney judging panel for his dedication to the local sailing community. Over the years John has held many positions on the club’s committee and is currently responsible for running the bar and most aspects of the clubhouse.

His dedication to his duties is legendary – he spent over a year overseeing the application of a Sport England bid which resulted in the construction of the current clubhouse.

A former Royal Yachting Association instructor, John has been a race officer for many club regattas and competitions and is a mainstay in ensuring they are organised and run well, always with a smile on his face. He also dedicates his time to raising much needed funds through corporate evenings and is always happy to share his expertise and advise when needed.

To reward John’s enthusiasm and dedication, Old Pulteney has presented him with a Maritime Heroes Awards certificate and bottle of its award-winning 12 Year Old Single Malt.

John will now be one of the 30 shortlisted sailing stars going through to the competition finals in December. If successful he will win £2,000, a commemorative trophy and a bottle of what has been dubbed the World’s Best Whisky – Old Pulteney 21 Year Old Single Malt.

Margaret Mary Clarke, Senior Brand Manager, said: “Old Pulteney is delighted to name John as one of our 30 Maritime Heroes. His achievements really stood out from the many fantastic entries we received and we wish him the best of luck in the finals.

“The awards scheme is a great way for Old Pulteney to celebrate the maritime industry’s many unsung heroes.”
