A man who stole bags of compost admitted theft when he appeared at Skegness Magistrates Court.

Stefan Widdop, 20, of High Street, took five bags from behind the Spar shop in Sutton on Sea in the early hours of March 21 and took them on his bicycle and on foot to his home. He was seen on cctv and arrested, telling police he took them for a disabled friend to plant flowers. The £19.95 bags were recovered.

Gary Farmer, defending said Widdop had trouble sleeping, went out on his bicycle and saw the compost, remembering his friend wanted some.

Magistrates heard that Widdop was subject to a conditional discharge imposed in May last year for possessing stolen property.

They imposed a 12 month community order with 50 hours’ unpaid work, plus £85 costs and a £60 surcharge.
