Update: Louth man escapes jail term after hammer attack


A 27-year-old man from Louth has avoided a jail sentence after assaulting a man with a hammer.

Craig Joseph Chappell, of Keddington Road in Louth was arrested in Eastgate on Saturday evening and charged with assault and possession of a weapon.

The victim, a 30-year-old, also from Louth was taken to Grimsby hospital with broken ribs and a lung injury.

Chappell appeared before magistrates at Lincoln on Monday (April 7) and was given a community order of 100 hours of unpaid work.

His guilty plea was taken into consideration by the court and the charge of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place was withdrawn.
