ELDC’s green waste collection fees come into force

Residents in East Lindsey can now sign up to pay £25 for green waste collections. They will begin during the fortnight following March 31.

For the one-off annual fee, East Lindsey District Council will empty households’ green waste bin every fortnight during the 2014-15 year, with a two week break over Christmas and the New Year. Once you have subscribed, you will receive a letter with full details including what time to present your bin, your collection day, and a sticker for your bin.

For those who subscribe by March 3, the fee amounts to £1 per collection.

Green waste collection used to be free service, but following a consultation in Spring last year the ELDC narrowly voted to introduce the £25 fee in July.

The decision was met with hostility by many local residents. Lauren Chapman from Louth said: “I pay council tax so I shouldn’t have to pay for it to be emptied. I know it’s only £25 but it’s the principle, so I will be making a compost heap in my garden!”

Jo Jo Kingham said: “Silly. [Green waste] will just have to go in black bin now, which I think alot of people will now do, and then thats probably going to cause more problems”. Others, such as Gavin Smith and Esther Mallabar, both from Louth, voiced concern that the decision will lead to an increase in people dumping waste elsewhere in order to avoid paying the fee.

There were, however, some voices in support of the ELDC’s decision. Katie Hook said: “If you don’t want to pay for the service, then don’t! If you will use it regularly then £25 isn’t much for the year.

“I imagine there are a hell of a lot of people in the world who wish that their problems were moaning about whether or not to pay for their green waste to be collected. Get a grip, people.”

Similarly, Rachel Graves, of Louth, said: “I think it’s a good idea because our bin is sat outside at the minute full to the brim. £25 for the whole year is ok.”

The Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Councillor Steve Newton, said: “The new green waste service will see a return to the all year round service that was highly valued in some areas when the change to seasonal collection was introduced.

“It will also save the Council in the region of £800,000 a year in the face of further Government funding cuts, and will help to safeguard front line services.”

Collections for those who subscribe by March 3 will start in the fortnight after March 31, although residents can still subscribe after this date but the start date may be later. So far, more than 2,000 residents have subscribed to the service.
