Mablethorpe residents have expressed their anger after a row of popular trees on the High Street were chopped down for ‘safety’ reasons.
The trees, which have stood proudly on the High Street for decades, were on land belonging to The Original Factory Shop.
A spokesman for The Original Factory Shop said: “We apologise for any upset caused following the removal of the trees in front of our Mablethorpe store.
“We removed these trees in the interest of public safety following a request from the Lincolnshire County Council, and will be planting saplings in their place, as we appreciate the trees are an important part of our community.”
Dean Myhill, area highways manager at Lincolnshire County Council, said: “We inspected the trees outside the Factory Shop in Mablethorpe and we notified the company that one of the trees was in a dangerous condition and required immediate action to be taken to make it safe in the interests of public safety.”
However, Mr Myhill added:“We did not advise the company to remove all the trees, which are on the Factory Shop’s land.”
Many members of the public have criticised the decision to remove the trees.
Heather Williams said: “Clearly a stupid decision, considering the trees add to the town’s charm.”
In Bloom member Candle Kath criticised the decision saying her group wanted the street to “look nice”.
She said the trees were “beautiful” and a “landmark”.
