Police said one of the suspects ran off towards Kidgate, through the area near the school towards Newmarket, while the other was quickly arrested.

The force said one suspect wore ‘distinctive white and black trainers, possibly a grey jacket’, but may have since changed his clothing by stripping layers off.

There was a huge police presence in the town and officers searched for suspect with the use of Humberside Police’s helicopter.

The second suspect was arrested later this evening in the Humberside area and police say a third man has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

A spokesperson added: “Louth offenders wore motorbike helmets. Discarded helmet found near London Road sports ground and cemetery.”

Police were present as pupils left Kidgate Primary Academy shortly after 3pm.

It is unclear whether anything was taken from the jewellers.

Local PCSOs have been visiting local schools to reassure children and staff after the incident.
