Locally produced meat has bagged a coveted silver medal in the prestigious World Steak Challenge.
The Lincolnshire Quality sirloin steak was competing against top cuts of meat from across the globe, including Australia, Japan, Ireland, Canada, Germany and the USA, making yellowbelly meat some of the best in the world.
Lincolnshire Co-op butchers entered steaks that were Lincoln Red, crossed with British Blue. The Lincoln Red breed is one of the UK’s oldest breeds of native beef cattle, with its meat known for being succulent and full of flavour with a fine marbled texture.
Steaks in the competition were judged both before and after they were cooked; raw categories in which they could win marks included appearance, aroma and colour while the cooked meat could score points for tenderness, succulence and flavour among other things.
Lincolnshire Co-op’s Supply Chain Manager Nicola Berry said: “We believe it’s important to know what you’re eating – that’s why all of our Lincolnshire Quality meat is born and reared on 20 local farms.
“It’s really exciting that our dedication to quality local meat has been recognised and we’re thrilled that the judges felt our steak was worthy of a silver medal.”
Lincolnshire Quality meat is part of the Love Local range at Lincolnshire Co-op food stores, which supports local producers. It features more than 100 products sourced from suppliers in the Society’s trading area – from cheese and jam to beer and crisps.
